I retired from active pastoral ministry in July 2019 after 39 years. I served smaller and larger United Methodist congregations, several of which had multiple staff including associate pastors. My areas of expertise are leadership, organizational structure for missional effectiveness and strategic planning, stewardship and financial leadership, as well as staff development and supervision. I am also an effective preacher and have a passion for growing disciples who can disciple others, and coaching congregational leaders in how to design discipleship systems that are relational, intentional and accountable.
I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from McMurry University, a Master of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry from United Theological Seminary, where my focus was the initiation process into church membership.
I have formal training in coaching pastors and other ministry leaders, am credentialed as an Associate Certified Coach through the International Coaching Federation, and am endorsed for Coaching Ministries by the Global Methodist Church Ecclesiastical Endorsing Board. I have also received training as a Simplified Accountable Structure (SAS) Coach (see https://kaykotan.com/sas/) and as a Healthy Rhythms Coach (see https://healthyrhythms.org/training/). After 40 years as a clergy member of the United Methodist Church, I became an Elder (Senior Status) in the Mid Texas Conference of the Global Methodist Church in July of 2023 and am appointed to this ministry of coaching and consulting
as an extension ministry outside the local church. I serve on the Mid Texas Conference Board of Ministry and the Ecclesiastical Endorsing Board of the Global Methodist Church.
I've been married to Joan since 1978, and we live in our dream home in a rural subdivision south of Alpine, TX in the beautiful Davis Mountains!
